~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stay in Touch with Your Feelings to Avoid Overspending
The commercial world spends a lot of money on advertising to convince you that you need high-priced electronics, designer clothing, forty-thousand dollar cars, and diamonds, diamonds, diamonds. Buying these things is supposed to be an expression of love or will satisfy your need to have the latest and greatest.
And chances are that you will fall or have already fallen for their pitch. That's why so many people carry painful credit card balances and have purchased homes far beyond what they can afford.
People don't overspend because it's the smart thing to do, but to satisfy emotional needs. Feelings of shame, deprivation, anger, aloneness, and a sense of being trapped drive consumers to hurt themselves as they reach for an elusive dream.
As a reader of this newsletter, I'm going to make the assumption that you care about your financial position and want to develop both financial sanity and wealth, neither of which can be yours without understanding why you tend to reach beyond your means.
Every business owner and advertising executive knows that purchases are emotional decisions, and they do what they can to appeal to your emotions. The problem for you is that when you buy something that you can't pay for now, there's a good chance that after the elation of the purchase passes you are going to be left with an uncomfortable emotional hangover.
To stay centered and true to yourself instead of placing yourself in financial danger, here are some suggestions.
1. While reading newspaper ads or viewing television commercials, turn your attention inward and see what you feel in your body. Focus especially on your heart area and your solar plexus. You may feel a heaviness, or on the other end of the spectrum, a high degree of elation. Or, you may feel a great sense of longing.
Take a breath, exhaling through your mouth. Let yourself sign as you exhale. As you do this, repeat the following statements, followed by your power word or BSFF cue word. I release my need to hurt myself by overspending I can feel ok about myself without buying new things. I am willing to protect myself.
Repeat this procedure until the uncomfortable feelings pass.
2. Make an agreement with yourself that you will not purchase anything when you are in one of these hyper emotional states.
The feeling I used to get (and still do on occasion) is an anxious feeling in my chest that makes me want to go shopping. Years ago, I decided to wait until the feeling passes before making any purchases. This used to take a few days, now it passes quickly. I have saved thousands of dollars by not buying things I thought I absolutely needed, but days later realized I was perfectly ok without.
3. While shopping keep part of your focus inward and once again become aware of what you are feeling. Release uncomfortable or hyper feelings by taking deep breaths and repeating your power word or BSFF cue word.
4. As I suggested last month, decide before you go shopping what you are going to spend and stick to your plans. When that little voice in your head says, "But it's only X dollars more," say "Yes, but I'm protecting and caring for myself by not overspending."
5. No matter what you eventually do, do not criticize or shame yourself if you get off track.
If a critical inner voice starts picking on you, breathe and say, "I'm not willing to be spoken to that way any more." Self-criticism is often the payoff that people need so they can maintain their habitual shame and deprivation.
Make this a holiday season filled with inner peace brought on by taking care of yourself and giving priority to your financial needs. For more ideas about using the power word to alter feelings, read Build Your Money Muscles http://ProsperityPlace.com/bymm
